Jaguar is founded by the then-21-year-old and not-yet-Sir William Lyons as Swallow Sidecar Company. The successful manufacture of aluminum motorcycle sidecars lead to the production of ground-breakingly aerodynamic aluminum-bodied passenger cars.



1936
Whitley, Coventry, United Kingdom
Its name derived from Swallow Sidecar and its ability to exceed 100mph, the SS100 was the first vehicle to be badged a Jaguar.



1948
London, England
The XK120 Sports Car introduced at the London Motor Show showcases the brand-new and now legendary inline XK 6-cylinder engine.



1951
Le Mans, France
On its racing debut in 1951, a competition version of the XK120 designated the C-Type captures Jaguar's first ever Le Mans win...and will repeat victory in 1953.



1954
Le Mans, France
A profound example of aeronautically influenced design, the aluminum monococque-bodied D-TYPE wins LeMans in 1954 and yet again in 1955.



1955
Jaguar creates the "Sports Sedan" segment with the introduction of the MK1: a sedan body style vehicle capable of the type of performance and handling previously thought only possible of a sports car. Brilliant.



1961
Geneva, Switzerland
The E-Type, a revolution in automotive styling and performance, is revealed at the Geneva motor show. It's arguably one of the most beautiful cars ever made. The E-Type still turns heads today.



1968
Jaguar again revolutionizes the automotive market when it imbues its new XJ6 with sports car dynamism. This is the world's first full-sized Sports Sedan.



1971
The 5.2liter SOHC powerplant initially produced nearly 300hp. It would appear in various Jaguar cars and undergo further development until the time of its retirement in 1997, when it was capable of 317hp and 353 lb-ft of torque.



1975
Styled similarly to its stablemate XJ and more aerodynamic than its predecessor, the XJS undergoes a multitude of technological and style evolutions over its 20-year life span.



1978
The XJS wins the Category 1 title of the Trans-American Championship Series besting even the Porsches which had previously dominated the decade.



1988
Le Mans, France
The XJR-9 wins LeMans ? the sixth LeMans win for Jaguar. Its seventh win comes in June 1990 with the XJR-12.




1990
Daytona Beach, Florida
Jaguar fields two XJR-12s at the Rolex 24 Hour endurance race in Daytona. They place 1st and 2nd--3rd place went to Porsche.



1992
This very exclusive vehicle is capable of 217mph. Less than 300 are created.



1996
New York, New York
The Museum of Modern Art announces the acquisition of an opalescent blue 1963 Jaguar E-type Roadster as only the third automobile to enter the permanent design MoMA collection.



1998
The XK8 is modified - supercharged to 370hp to become the first-ever production Jaguar to receive the R designation: the XKR.



1999
Inspired by the "grace, pace, and space" of the original 1960's S-Type, Jaguar introduces a new mid-sized Sport Sedan: the S-Type.



2000
Envisioned as the ideal roadster and evoking the spirit of the E-Type, the F-Type Concept is awarded the AutoWeek Editors' Award for "Best In Show" at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.



2001
Frankfurt, Germany
The R-Coupe: Jaguar reveals the first concept car developed by its Advanced Design Studio under Ian Callum at the Frankfurt Motor Show. The R-Coupe reinterprets Jaguar's core design values in a fresh and forward-thinking way.



2003

Translated from the well-received C-XF Concept, the XF introduces a bold, new, dynamic look for Jaguar and is a distinct departure from its predecessor, the out-going S-Type.
